TRAVERSE CITY, MI : Hit and run spurs police chase on Wednesday, August 9, 2017
A hit-and-run crash in Grand Traverse County sparked a half-mile, high-speed police chase that ended in a head-on collision with another vehicle.
Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies first responded to a report of the hit and run crash at about 8 p.m. Wednesday in Long Lake Township, according to a release.
Michigan State Police were dispatched to the area to search for the vehicle, and spotted it driving erratically at high speed along North Long Lake Road as it passed passed the trooper's patrol car, the release states.
The trooper turned on his lights and siren while pursuing the vehicle, which accelerated away from the patrol car. The vehicle also crossed the center line to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone.
The suspect vehicle also passed a deputy's patrol car, which also turned on lights and sirens to get the suspect to stop, but the driver continued west on North Long Lake Road.
The vehicle again crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle, causing the suspect's vehicle to leave the road and overturn.
Drivers of both vehicles were sent to Munson Medical Center to be treated for injuries — he suspect was held for observation and treatment of non-life threatening injuries and the other driver was treated and released.
The investigation is ongoing and results will be forwarded to the Grand Traverse County prosecutor.
