DENTON, MD : A two-vehicle collision on Tuesday, August 8, 2017
A two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on state Route 404 at state Route 16 sent three people to hospitals and closed the intersection for more than an hour.
According to Maryland State Police, a 2010 Subaru Outback, driven by Deborah Knox Simpkins, 56, of Denton, was traveling north on Route 16 through the Route 404 intersection with a green light at about 8:20 a.m. when a 2008 Lincoln MKX, driven by Adrian A. Graciano-Castro, 26, of Lincoln, Del., and going east on Route 404, struck the Subaru on the driver's side of the vehicle. The vehicles came to rest in the median of Route 404.
Police said Simpkins, her 9-year-old granddaughter and Graciano-Castro were injured in the collision. Police said Simpkins was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, and her granddaughter was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Police said Graciano-Castro was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Del.
State police did not have the conditions available for all three people on Tuesday afternoon.
The Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded to the scene for a reconstruction.
According to investigators, witnesses said Graciano-Castro drove the Lincoln through a red light and hit Simpkins' Subaru. Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
The Maryland State Police were assisted at the scene by the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, Denton Police, MSP Aviation Command, Maryland State Highway Administration and Caroline County fire and emergency medical services personnel.
