Sacramento, CA : Man identified in fatal Page Mill Road crash on Tuesday, January, 9th 2018

A driver whose car crashed into a tree, killing him on Page Mill Road on Monday, has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office.

The driver, Juergen Willmann, 45, of Stanford, apparently drifted off the road for an unknown reason and struck the tree at Page Mill and Coyote Hill roads. He was not wearing a seat belt and succumbed to his injuries, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Art Montiel said.

Willmann is listed as a physician and professor of radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine in the body imaging division. He was head of the Willmann Laboratory, a research lab dedicated to new molecular imaging for detecting and monitoring cancer and inflammatory diseases, according to his Stanford profile. He was also a member of the Stanford Cancer Institute and Bio-X.

"We are all deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our friend and esteemed colleague, Juergen Willmann, MD. This is a devastating tragedy for which no words will suffice. Our love and prayers are with his wife, Amelie Lutz, MD and family during this most difficult time," Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, chair of the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, said in a written statement.

Emergency-radio dispatches indicated crews responded to an injury accident the intersection around 11:55 a.m.

A rescue team was also requested to the scene, where one person was reportedly unconscious and trapped in a vehicle, according to police radio.

Rescuers pronounced Willmann dead at the scene minutes later, according to dispatch radio.

His orange Fiat 500 ran into a tree while driving east on Page Mill Road. Montiel said Willmann was the solo occupant. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Page Mill was blocked between Coyote Hill and Deer Creek roads until about 12:30 p.m. The far left eastbound lane of Page Mill Road was closed at the time of the crash.

The CHP will be investigating the crash, which fell within the agency's jurisdiction.
