LANCASTER, CA : Fatal crash closes southbound 14 Freeway in Lancaster on Tuesday, 20th September 2016
A 57-year-old woman from Llano was killed Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the southbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in the Lancaster area, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision was reported at 3:38 a.m. near the Avenue M exit, where all southbound lanes were later closed, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi. One person was dead at the scene, and fire and medical personnel were assessing other victims, Polizzi said.
A news release from the CHP said that around 3:30 a.m., the Llano woman, driving a 2004 Jeep Rubicon, stopped and partially blocked the No. 3 lane and right shoulder of the southbound 14 Freeway south of Avenue M.
A 65-year-old driver of a 2014 Toyota Tacoma driving southbound in the No. 3 lane wasn’t able to avoid the Jeep and crashed into it, causing the Llano woman and a man in the Jeep to be ejected. The man, a 65-year-old from Llano, sustained major injuries and was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster.
The Toyota driver, a 22-year-old from Lancaster, was treated and released at the scene.
CHP Officer Gil Hernandez said it initially appeared that the woman wore a seat belt, but the man did not.
Hernandez said people should always wear seat belts, and when driving be cautious and look ahead as far as possible to avoid any hazards.
One lane was reopened about 6:20 a.m., and the remaining lanes were reopened about an hour afterward, the CHP reported.
