Burlington, VT : Seven people injured after van roll-over in Burlington on Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Seven people were brought to the hospital with minor injuries after a transportation service van for clients of a local nonprofit crashed and rolled onto its side on St. Paul Street on Wednesday, Burlington Fire Department Capt. Tobey Sicard said.

Six of the seven people needed to be extricated from the vehicle due to the van's layout, Sicard said. Firefighters tore through the roof of the van to free occupants. The front passenger was able to get out with a bit of assistance through a window. Sicard said he did not know the name of the nonprofit as of 11:30 a.m.

The van, which was traveling south, hit a parked car shortly before 10 a.m. and then rolled over, Sicard said. All seven people were wearing seat belts, and they were each transported by Burlington Rescue to the University of Vermont Medical Center for evaluation. The driver was placed on a stretcher before being placed in the back of an ambulance.

"All of the patients were able to walk with their own power out of the vehicle with our assistance," Sicard said. "They were very lucky. ... They were all restrained. Seat belts save lives."

The cause of the crash will be investigated by the fire officials and the Burlington Police Department, Sicard said.

St. Paul Street from Howard Street to the rotary on Shelburne Street was closed. The roadway reopened to traffic at 2:30 p.m.

Multiple units from Burlington Fire Department and Rescue, UVM Rescue and Burlington police officers were on scene.
