Jefferson, MD : Man from West Virginia died in a crash with tractor-trailer parked on the westbound on U.S. 340 on Friday night August 22nd 2014
A family member of the West Virginia man killed in a crash on U.S. 340 remembered him as kind and generous.
Kenny Burcham, 54, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday after his 1997 Jeep Cherokee drifted off the highway at about 10:50 p.m. near Lander Road and collided with a 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer parked on the westbound shoulder, Maryland State Police said.
Emergency workers removed Burcham from his car and prepared to take him to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, but he died at the scene at about 11:40 p.m. He appeared to have severe injuries to the head and chest, Trooper First Class Justin Ardinger said.
A state police helicopter that likely would have flown Burcham to a hospital was grounded by weather conditions.
Burcham was traveling back from having dinner with his sister in Pennsylvania, according to one of his other sisters, Diana Heishman.
Heishman said Burcham's wife and relatives were shocked by the news of his death.
“We keep thinking we're going to wake up from a dream,” she said.
Burcham was always supportive of his family, Heishman added. When his father broke his ankle in January, he was there to help, and his nieces and nephews knew they could come to him for anything.
“He was the youngest of five kids. The only boy, and he took care of us all,” she said.
The last time Heishman saw Burcham was last week when he was fixing her air conditioner.
“Anything we needed, he was there for us,” she said.
The tractor-trailer driver, Hassan Mahamat of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was unhurt and remained on the scene during the investigation, police said.
No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved, Ardinger said.
Mahamat had pulled over to the shoulder to inspect his truck for mechanical problems shortly before it was struck by the Jeep, police said.
All westbound lanes of U.S. 340 were closed until about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The cause of the crash is unknown, police said, but neither driver appeared to have been impaired by alcohol or drugs.
The Maryland State Police Western Region Reconstruction Team and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are investigating.
