Hernando,FL : Two killed in wrong-way driving crash in Hernando County on July, Tuesday 4th 2017

A wrong-way driver forced a deputy off the road before slamming into another car on Cortez Boulevard early Tuesday morning, killing both drivers, Hernando County Sheriff's deputies said.

The wrong-way driver was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of Cortez Boulevard near Ridge Manor around 1 a.m. Tuesday, deputies said.

The driver passed a Hernando County deputy and a truck near McKethan Road, causing both to swerve off the road to avoid a crash.

The deputy, who was not injured, radioed for assistance as the car continued along Cortez Boulevard toward Interstate 75, but there wasn't enough time for another nearby deputy to intervene, the Sheriff's Office said. About a minute later, the wrong-way driver crashed into another car near the Ridge Manor Campground.

The head-on collision killed both drivers, deputies said.

The Florida Highway Patrol was called to investigate the crash.
