One dead, one in custody after overnight crash on I-40
One person is dead and another is in jail after an overnight crash on Interstate 40.Jose Miguel Castillo-Calles slammed his Volkswagen Passat into motorcycle while both vehicles were driving east on Interstate 40, according to Captain Kenneth Walburn. The two vehicles became stuck together, swerved across the interstate and hit guard rails on either side of the roadMotorcycle driver John R. Johnson, 48, was thrown from his bike, police said. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Castillo-Calles fled the scene on foot, but was taken into custody soon afterward, Walburn said. He was charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication and driving without a license.Police said Castillo-Calles performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. A blood sample was drawn at Metro General Hospital to test for alcohol and drugs.He is being held in lieu of $205,000 bond.Nashville police responded to the fatal crash shortly after midnight Monday. I-40 E was closed near the I-24 junction for hours.
