Three people were thrown from their motorcycles and injured in a crash as they rode in a pack with a fourth motorcycle, the Isabella County Sheriff's Department reports.
The crash happened at 1:37 p.m. Sunday, July 26, on West Blanchard, just west of South Coldwater Road in Rolland Township. That's southwest of Mount Pleasant in Isabella County.
A group of four motorcycles were westbound on West Blanchard when the lead motorcycle slowed down for rough pavement.
The next motorcycle in line, a 2003 Harley Davidson Electra-Glide operated by Larry Alan Gay, 72, of Portland, also slowed down, police said.
The third motorcycle in line, a 2007 Harley Davidson Dyna operated by Tammy Sue Gay, 47, struck the motorcycle operated by Larry Gay. Tammy Sue Gay of St. Johns told police she did not see the other two motorcycles slow down.
The fourth motorcycle in line, a 2013 Harley Davidson FXS Blackline, was operated by Larry Hugh Bates, 77, of Lansing. Bates laid his motorcycle down in an effort to avoid running into the motorcycles ahead of him, police said.
All three of the operators were thrown from their motorcycles.
Tammy Sue Gay was airlifted to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland by LifeNet. She was wearing a helmet, police said.
Larry Hugh Bates was airlifted to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing by Aero Med as a result of head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Larry Alan Gay suffered minor injuries and refused treatment. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Michigan State Police, Millbrook-Rolland Fire Department, Aero Med, LifeNet, Mobile Medical Response and Central Dispatch assisted the Isabella County Sheriff's Department.
