Malheur County, OR : California man killed in Malheur County two-vehicle crash on Monday night, July 21, 2014
A two-vehicle crash in heavy rain and high water along U.S. 95 in Malheur County killed an Elk Grove, Calif. man Monday night.
The head-on collision was reported around 9:55 p.m. near milepost 104, about 17 miles north of the border with Nevada, according to a news release. Emergency responders from Humboldt County, Nevada were t0000he first to respond, the release states. They encountered water of 3 to 4 feet covering a dip in the roadway, police said, and found the 57-year-old victim in the water, deceased.
Investigators believe that the man was driving a 1999 Acura four-door sedan south on the highway when the road dipped into an area where heavy rain had been collecting. His car tossed up a wall of water and the Acura then struck a northbound Freightliner truck pulling a semi-trailer head-on. The driver of the truck, Timothy Dale Longhofer, 55, from Wilder, Idaho, was not injured, police said.
Investigators believe the Acura's driver was not using a seatbelt, the news release states, and was ejected from the car.
