Lewiston, ME : 86-year-old pedestrian killed in crash on Wednesday, Nov 18, 2015
Medical workers battled to save the life of a man who was struck by a car early Wednesday night on Lisbon Street near Webber Avenue.Witnesses said the man was knocked out of his shoes and socks when he was struck at about 5 p.m."They've been doing compressions for 15 minutes now," said Katie Henderson, who heard the impact from her nearby apartment.A short time later, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was covered with a blanket while police began their investigation.Friends identified the victim as Norm Rivard, 86, who tended bar at a nearby club and was headed home when he was struck."He was our oldest living member and he was still tending bar two days a week," said Chuck Barrett, of the Webber Social Club. "He was a well-loved man down here. He was a dad to a lot of people."Rivard was married, Barrett said, with a wife and daughter living nearby. He also had a son who lives in Bangor.Witnesses said a registered nurse was among the first to stop at the scene. Still in scrubs, she rendered aid to the victim until rescuers arrived.Police blocked off a section of Lisbon Street between South and East avenues to traffic and tried to keep a growing crowd of onlookers at bay. Officers at the scene were searching for witnesses."I heard a big, big impact," Sheridan said. "It was a big bang. It was so loud, it startled me. It had to have hit him really hard."When Sheridan and others rushed out to the street, they saw shoes strewn across the roadway and the victim motionless in the street. They did not know the victim, they said. The driver who hit him had been traveling toward downtown, witnesses said.It was initially believed that the driver had fled the scene."He came back on foot to check it out," said a woman named Sonya, who pulled over when she saw that a man was down. "And then he took off running. He just took off."The driver was later located, however, and was being questioned by police. The driver was taken to the Police Department for a blood-alcohol test, as is customary in fatal crash investigations. The driver's identity was not released. Police said they would not likely disclose that information until Thursday.Henderson said when they first got to the street, they believed someone had dropped a bag of trash off a truck. Then they saw the victim's shoes in the street.Police taped off an area around the crash site as they prepared to conduct an accident reconstruction. They remained at the scene hours after the crash was reported. At Webber Social, Barrett said they were still adjusting to the news that Rivard was gone."We're just beside ourselves down here," he said.
