Sunnyvale , CA : 24 - Years old Bicyclist was hit and killed while riding bicycle at Highway 85 on Sunday , January 25th 2015
A 24-year-old man from Merced was under the influence of alcohol when he was hit and killed while riding a bicycle on Highway 85 last weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly collision was reported about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes approaching Fremont Avenue after a 2010 Ford Fusion rear-ended the bicycle in the slow lane, Officer Art Montiel said.
The rider landed further down the roadway in the same lane and was pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been identified as Pedro Rodriguez.
The driver of the Ford, a 34-year-old San Jose woman, stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
There were no 911 calls reporting the bicycle on the freeway before the collision.
Montiel said investigators detected an "odor of an alcoholic beverage" on the victim at the scene, adding that it's illegal to ride a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol or on a freeway.
