Novi, MI : Two people dead in fatal crash on I-96 in Novi, Michigan on Thursday October 22 2015
Two people are confirmed dead following a fatal crash Thursday morning on the westbound I-696 ramp to westbound I-96 in Novi, Michigan State Police reported. One of the victims has been identified as 25-year-old Fred Scroggs, of Westland. A GoFundMe account has been created to help his family pay for funeral costs, and the $5,000 goal has already been surpassed. The identity of the second victim has not yet been released.
Preliminary information revealed that Scroggs, a tow truck driver, was stopped on the left shoulder of the ramp around 10 a.m. Thursday to assist another motorist with changing a flat tire. The fatal accident occurred after a 37-year-old Canton man driving a Chevrolet Tahoe crossed over the fog line and struck the tow truck — resulting in the death of Scroggs and the driver of the SUV. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver of the vehicle that Scroggs stopped to assist was not injured, according to Michigan State Police.
Fred felt it was unsafe for her to be standing so close to the busy freeway and advised her to safely wait in her vehicle while he serviced her car,” a friend wrote on the GoFundMe page. “In doing so, (he) was able to save her life.”
Novi police responded to the area to assist troopers with the investigation. The ramp was closed following the accident but was reopened around 2 p.m., according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
