Monroe County , IL : Two young womans were killed in head-on crash in Monroe County on Saturday night , January 10th 2015
Two young women died in a head-on crash Saturday night on Highway 159 between Hecker and Red Bud, the Illinois State Police said.
The two who died are Abigail A. Liefer, 19, of Ruma, Ill., and Hannah M. Porter, 20, of Red Bud. Liefer was the driver of a car that was struck by an oncoming car that crossed the center line. Porter was her backseat passenger.
A front-seat passenger survived, as did the driver of the car that hit theirs.
It happened at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Liefer was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt that was heading south on Highway 159. Crystal R. Steinheimer, 20, from Red Bud, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo north.
Steinheimer's car crossed the center line south of Sunset Lane and collided with Liefer's car. Police say they don't know why the Aveo crossed the center line. An accident-reconstruction team is investigating.
Liefer died at St. Louis University Hospital. Porter, a backseat passenger, died at Red Bud Regional Hospital. Illinois State Police said a front-seat passenger, Grace E. Edwards, survived. Edwards, 20, of Red Bud, was taken to a Belleville hospital with minor injuries.
Steinheimer was thrown from the Aveo in the crash. She was taken by medical helicopter to a St. Louis hospital and listed in serious but stable condition, said Trooper Calvin Dye of the Illinois State Police.
