San Lorenzo, CA : Man killed after abandoning car, trying to run across I-880 freeway on Saturday morning, December 5, 2015

A man who had apparently abandoned his car after a crash on Interstate 880 early Saturday morning was killed while trying to run across the freeway, police said.

Bryant Lolohea, 27, of Hayward was driving north on the freeway around 1:30 a.m. when his Cadillac rear-ended a passenger van near the Paseo Grande exit, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.

Police say Lolohea got out of his car, jumped over the median wall and tried to run across the southbound lanes, but was struck by multiple vehicles and died from his injuries.

The passengers of the rear-ended van -- which broke down on shortly after the crash -- narrowly escaped injury by getting out of the van before it was hit by "several other vehicles," according to the report.
