Jonesboro, AR : Sheriff's deputy injured in crash on Highway 18 at Quality Way on Wednesday night, Nov 11, 2015

Emergency crews worked a crash Wednesday night that involved a local law enforcement officer.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. on Highway 18 at Quality Way.

According to a Jonesboro Police Department crash report, Craighead County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Kirby was driving east on Highway 18 when he was hit.

The crash report states that a Ford Focus, driven by Aaron Jackson, failed to yield at the stop sign at Quality Way and turned left in front of Kirby.

Kirby tried to swerve to avoid hitting Jackson but the cars hit in the turning lane.

Kirby’s patrol vehicle was thrown into the ditch on the north side of the road.

Jackson’s vehicle came to a stop in the middle of traffic.

Additional vehicles then became involved in the accident.

Anthony McMath was driving down Highway 18 in a Chevrolet Tahoe when he saw Jackson’s car in his lane of traffic. McMath tried to swerve to avoid Jackson but sideswiped his vehicle.

Randall Cable told police that he noticed cars in front of him pull off on the side of the road so he switched to the inside lane of traffic headed east. Cable, who was driving a Peterbuilt semi-truck, said he saw Kirby’s police vehicle in the ditch.

He said when he turned his attention back to the road, he saw Jackson’s car in his lane of traffic. Cable said he swerved to miss Jackson’s car but he hit the front of it.

Jackson was taken to St. Bernards with serious injuries. Jonesboro police are trying to determine if Jackson exited his vehicle after the crash or was thrown from his car.

Kirby was also taken to St. Bernards with a non-life threatening injury to his hip.

Neither McMath nor Cable were injured.
