A 70-year-old Merrill man has been sentenced for his role in an accident that seriously injured a man last fall.
James Paul Sikon was sentenced for failing to stop or identify after a personal injury accident.
Midland County District Court Judge Michael D. Carpenter sentenced Sikon to one day in jail with credit for time served, $975 fines and costs, and to pay $619 restitution to the victim.
The accident occurred on Oct. 29, 2016, in Lee Township when Sikon was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado south on South Eight Mile Road. He told deputies he thought he struck a mailbox near West Isabella Road, the Midland County Sheriff’s Office report states.
In fact, Sikon had hit 54-year-old Adam Edwin Cross of Midland, who was riding a moped in the same direction. Cross suffered severe injuries to his legs and internal bleeding, and was taken to the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland for treatment.
Sikon continued driving until the front passenger tire went flat, near West Prairie Road, the report states.
