LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C : 75-year-old woman seriously hurt when car slam into the back of a flatbed truck on Wednesday morning July 16th 2014
Lancaster, South Carolina
Robert Smith was on Highway 9 in Lancaster County on Wednesday morning when he witnessed a horrific sight. He saw a car slam into the back of a flatbed truck, and go right under it. The crash happened near the Dixie Food Mart at Heyward Hough Road.
"It just happened so fast, all at once. I don't even think she had time to see him at all, and she just ran right into the back of him," Smith said.
He parked his 18-wheeler in the road and ran to the small Honda. Inside, 75-year-old Ora Hughey was unconscious, and appeared trapped under the steering wheel. Smith knew he couldn't to get her through the front doors.
"I opened the back door because I couldn't get the front door open, and I got in and switched the car off, and made sure she was OK,” Smith said.
Smith spent the next four hours near his truck, which sat motionless as traffic backed up.
Chopper Nine Skyzoom flew over the scene shortly after the crash, which shut down the two-lane road for four hours.
Sheriff's deputies sent highway traffic on a lengthy detour from Highway 9 to Rocky River Road. Logging trucks sat idling there for hours.
Late Wednesday afternoon, state troopers said 54-year-old Derrill Broome of Blythewood was charged with failure to yield the right of way as he was backing out of a private driveway.
Hughey was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, but the hospital has not released her condition.
