Atlanta, GA : 2 kids, grandmother killed going to church as fleeing car thief crashes during police chase in Atlanta on Sunday morning, January 31, 2016
A 6-year-old victim of a deadly Georgia car crash during a police chase near Atlanta was found hours after authorities completed their investigation.
Dorothy Wright, 76, and her two grandchildren were killed on their way to church Sunday morning when a man smashed into her car while fleeing College Park police officers.
Cops had chased the suspect to the Atlanta city limits when he crashed into the car, killing Wright, 12-year-old Cameron Cosner and 6-year-old Layla Partridge.
Cameron’s body was lying in the street after being tossed from the car, witnesses told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The boy died at the scene. The crash impact ejected Layla's body from the wreck. Georgia troopers found the girl about 11 hours after the crash, only realizing she was a passenger while notifying the family of Wright's death. Her body was "heavily covered with shrubbery," according to Georgia Department of Public Safety.
The crash site was in a residential neighborhood three miles east of downtown Atlanta.
“I saw that red car coming down the street, minding their business,” witness Michael Montgomery told the Atlanta television station. “All of a sudden I saw that black car run a stop sign right here and hit them, t-boned them.”
The suspect escaped as cops attended to the victims in the mangled red car, the Journal-Constitution reported.
“I was just screaming, man, look. Get that guy because he killed those people,” Montgomery added.
The chase began at hotel parking lot near the Atlanta International Airport and ended when the runaway driver ran a stop sign and smashed into Wright’s vehicle.
Police did not release a description of the suspect.
Both the Georgia State Patrol and Fulton County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the circumstances behind the police chase crash.
