SAND HOLLOW, ID : Semi truck driver who caused crash fell asleep on Wednesday morning July 9th 2014

Idaho State Police tell KBOI a semi truck driver hauling tortillas fell asleep behind the wheel causing the truck to roll onto its side.

Officials said the interstate was blocked near Exit 17 near Sand Hollow for several hours Wednesday morning.

Troopers closed the interstate and flagged cars onto a detour around the crash. But, about 30 vehicles were stuck on the interstate behind the rolled semi, before the closure.

The 32-year-old driver from Puyallup, Wash., was wearing his seatbelt.

One driver, Rickey Flood, waited with his daughter and their three pets. Flood said he stopped for gas just down the interstate, and decided to clean up, something he said he regretted.

"We wouldn't even be here if we hadn't stopped to take a shower (and) got fuel, "Flood said. "I could've gotten fuel and gone down the road, but we stopped and got a shower."

Crews called a tow truck, and many stranded drivers got out of their vehicles while they waited.

"She got a little hop scotch thing out there on the road, was playing hop scotch while we sit and wait," Flood said. "(We're) talking to other people (and) twiddling our thumbs."

The tow was able to get the truck moved to median after about an hour and a half. The semi truck driver was taken to the hospital with an arm injury, although it's unclear how severe the injury is.
