A North Carolina man sustained non-life threatening injuries in a Saturday morning crash on Interstate 40 in Cocke County. Jackson Grant 24, Maggie Valley, was eastbound at 7:20 a.m. when his pickup struck the rear of a tractor trailer just east of the 435 exit. “He was traveling at an apparent high rate of speed when he hit the tractor trailer. His vehicle then rolled an estimated five times or greater and he was ejected,” said Trooper Mike Bales. The pickup came to rest on the roadway. Traffic was blocked for more than 30 minutes. First Call EMS requested a medical helicopter which put down on the interstate. Grant then was flown to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment. Cocke County Fire and Sheriff’s Department personnel responded to the scene. Newport Police blocked entry to the interstate from Cosby Road. Bales said alcohol containers were found in the vehicle and the driver faces charges of DUI and a seat belt violation. The trucker was not injured and damage to his rig was minimal.
