Springfield, OH : Man killed in fatal Springfield motorcycle crash on Monday, April 10, 2017
Springfield Police have identified the man killed when his motorcycle collided with a car near Foster and Columbia in Springfield.
Police say 36-year-old James Carmen from Springfield died in the crash.
“She hit him and he was underneath the whole car,” Marcia Johnson said who witnessed the immediate aftermath of what happened. “His whole body was underneath the car.”
Johnson–who was running errands at time–stopped and watched, hoping for a positive outcome.
“It’s just scary,” Johnson said. “I just thinking about everybody who owns a bike and out riding around today. It’s just a very scary situation and I just pray for everyone involved.”
Police say Carmen was riding a motorcycle, going north on Foster in Springfield, before turning onto Columbia. That’s when a Chevy Impala–traveling east on Columbia–struck Carmen–who was ejected from the bike.
Police say Carmen did have a stop sign before turning onto Columbia.
“I’m not going to speculate on fault at this point,” Sgt. Brett Bauer said. “I would just say that the traffic control devices at the intersection. The impala doesn’t neccesarily have a traffic control device other than the roadway markings.”
Fraggle Smith–who didn’t want to show his face–is a motorcyclist himself. He says he has witnessed first-hand people texting at the wheel of cars and not paying attention.
“We run into a lot, especially if we are going down the interstate,” Smith said. “The texting. Talking on the phone. Check your mirrors more. Watch your mirrors a lot more because you never know if we’re behind you or beside you.”
Whether you have four wheels or two, Sgt. Bauer says everyone should be extra alert this time of year.
“Keep your glasses on. Wear your helmets. Be careful,” Sgt. Bauer said. “Other cars can’t see you as well. As far as people in the other cars, be aware of motorcyles and bicycles. They have a smaller profile.”
