An 18-year-old western Pennsylvania man is facing charges in a high-speed crash that left his friend dead.
Christopher Beck was arraigned Wednesday on charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and related offenses. In the death of 16-year-old Shane Phillips.
Authorities say Beck lost control of his Volkswagen and crashed into a mailbox, tree and fire hydrant in May. Phillips died at a hospital and an autopsy showed he died of blunt force trauma to the head.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Beck's blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Police say another teen in the vehicle told authorities the speedometer read 100 mph just before the crash.
It's not known if he has a lawyer who can comment.
