A 24-year-old Southampton, N.J. man was killed Monday night driving his motorcycle on State Highway 38.

Shawn Kennedy collided with a vehicle driven by Priscilla Merritt, 57, of Waldorf, Md. at approximately 10:45 p.m. near Always Drive in Lumberton Township, police said Tuesday in a statement. Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained from the wreck.

Police said the crash remains under investigation, however, they believe speed played a contributing factor in the collision. No charges have been filed at this point.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Lumberton Police Department at 609-267-1111.

Motor vehicle tragedies have struck the Kennedy family twice.

Kennedy’s mother, Theresa Powell Kennedy, said in a Facebook post that Shawn Kennedy’s father was “killed by a careless driver” when her son was 2 years old.

“I really hope if it was someone else’s fault I hope God really punishes that person,” the mother wrote about her son’s death. “The person who killed (his father) got away with his and who knows how many other murders, they got away with.”
