Grand Junction,CO : Surgeon injured in bicycle crash on monument on may, wednesday 3rd 2017
A local orthopedic surgeon remained hospitalized Wednesday several days after being struck by a vehicle while bicycling on Colorado National Monument.
Kennan Vance, a partner at Western Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, was in critical but stable condition at St. Mary’s Hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to spokeswoman Teri Cavanagh.
Law enforcement is still investigating the wreck, but Colorado National Monument Chief Ranger Mark Davison said it appears two bicyclists crashed while riding downhill about a half-mile or a mile east of Cold Shivers Point around 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Davison said a truck headed uphill moved slightly into the opposing lane to pass another vehicle that was legally parked on the side of the road. Two bicyclists rounding a blind corner while the truck was passing the car appear to have “overcorrected and crashed,” Davison said. Both bicyclists were injured.
Nobody has been cited yet in the wreck pending the outcome of the investigation, Davison said.
Vance’s professional biography on his business’ website says he is married with children. He attended Brigham Young University before earning a medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
Western Orthopedics and Sports Medicine staff members confirmed Wednesday that Vance is a partner at the company. “He is in all of our prayers, and we are looking forward to his return as he is a tremendous asset to our practice, his patients and the community,” the organization said in a release.
