An 87-year-old Idaho Falls man died after a two-vehicle crash on Monday.

Idaho Falls police say Richard Lee Starnes was traveling north in a Toyota truck on Yellowstone Avenue in Idaho Falls when he went through a red light and hit a GMC truck traveling west on 17th Street/Pancheri Drive.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that Richard Starnes had a medical episode, as witnesses reported that he appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel prior to entering the intersection,” according to a news release, which adds that the accident is still under investigation.

Starnes and his spouse, whose name was not released, were both extricated from the vehicle and transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, police said. Starnes later died.

His spouse did not sustain any life-threatening injuries in the crash, police said.

Authorities did not release the name of the male driving the GMC truck, but they did say he was not injured in the incident.
