LAKELAND, FL : Teen faces manslaughter charge after high speed chase crash on Tuesday, February 7th 2017
Authorities say a central Florida teen faces a manslaughter charge after his 15-year-old passenger died in a crash during a high-speed chase with police.
Lakeland police Sgt. Gary Gross tells local news outlets that Milaya Cooper died Tuesday night after being pulled from a stolen vehicle that caught fire. The 16-year-old driver also faces numerous charges.
Gross says the driver suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.
He says the vehicle reached speeds of 95 mph before crashing. An officer pulled the teen from the burning vehicle, but he resisted and the officer used a stun gun.
Gross says the teen never said anyone else was in the car. Cooper was in the back, surrounded by smoke. Arriving officers saw her and pulled her out.
