AVON PARK, FL : 3-year-old thrown from SUV in crash on Wednesday, 7th September 2016
A 3-year-old boy was ejected from a SUV as it rolled on U.S. 27 Wednesday afternoon after hitting a bus.
The boy, who was not wearing a seat belt or strapped into a car seat, ended up in the middle lane of the southbound side of the highway, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. He, along with the driver of the Ford Explorer, 45-year-old Janette Torres-Orta of Avon Park, were both airlifted from the scene to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. Another passenger, 24-year-old Iris Cotte of Sebring, was transported to Florida Hospital Heartland with minor injuries.
According to the FHP, the accident happened at around 3:20 p.m. when the Explorer, was headed north and approaching Davis Citrus Road. A bus being driven by 84-year-old William Jernigan of Sebring pulled into the path of the Explorer.
Torres-Orta tried to take evasive action, the FHP said, but the bus clipped the right rear of the SUV, which veered across the median into the southbound lanes, where it overturned once. Neither of the adults in the Explorer were buckled in, either.
Jernigan was cited for violation of right of way.
Editor’s note: This story has been corrected to show the bus struck the right-rear of the SUV. The original story mistakenly stated the opposite
