Athens, TX : Man killed in a collision involving a semi-truck and passenger car near Poynor on Tuesday, July 26, 2016

The Texas Department of Public Safety has released the name of a man killed in a collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger car near Poynor on Tuesday.

The driver of the passenger car, 33-year-old Denzel Carillo, of Jacksonville, was killed in the crash. The driver of the semi was treated for minor injuries at East Texas Medical Center in Athens.

The wreck occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on U.S. Highway 175 about one-half east of LaPoynor school. Trooper Nick Makowski, who investigated the wreck, said Carillo was eastbound in a Honda Civic, as the driver of the International semi approached, heading west.

Makowski said the Honda crossed the center stripe for reasons yet to be determined, then went into the westbound lane. The vehicles collided right front to right front.

Following impact, the vehicles left the roadway, and came to rest in the grass. The wreck caused major damage to both vehicles. U.S. Highway 175 was closed in the area for several hours due to a significant diesel spill.

Makowski said no charges are expected concerning the wreck. The trooper said Carillo's body was sent for an autopsy.

No further information concerning the wreck was available at press time. The crash remains under investigation.
