Cedar Mill , OR : 70-year-old Portland man killed after FedEx truck collided with a cyclist late Thursday, November 20th 2014
A FedEx truck collided with a cyclist late Thursday morning, killing a 70-year-old Portland man, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said.
Kirke Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson worked at Portland Community College for 28 years as a technology specialist. He had just retired at the end of October.
Emergency crews were called out to the intersection of Northwest Barnes Road and Northwest Cornell Road at around 11:45 a.m. after getting reports of a crash.
The sheriff's office said the truck turned into the path of Johnson, who was riding his recumbent bike.
The FedEx driver, 60-year-old Delmar Suiter of Gresham, cooperated with investigators. The sheriff's office said inattentiveness was likely a contributing factor in the crash.
According to a 2007 article on PCC's website, Johnson kept track on the Internet of the miles he road on his recumbent bike. By October of that year, he had ridden his bike to the college 109 days, racking up 3,655 miles.
Leslie Riester, the head of Technology Services Solutions at PCC said she remembered Johnson as "a quiet, gentle, sweet man. He was very dedicated and reliable."
No memorial service has been planned at this time.
