Roseburg, OR : Two dead after vehicle accident on Highway 138 on Monday, June 26, 2017
Two elderly Tualatin residents are dead after their vehicle left the road and landed in the North Umpqua River, according to police.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday, police say driver John Boyd Staples and his passenger, Elizabeth Ann Staples, both 91, were traveling eastbound on Highway 138 when their vehicle left the road for an unknown reason, crashed into several boulders and continued down a steep embankment before coming to rest in the North Umpqua River, according to the Oregon State Police.
The vehicle, a maroon 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, landed on its top when it crashed into the river and was completely submerged, according to police. Both of the vehicle’s occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in the collision.
Troopers from OSP were assisted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s Search and Rescue Team, Douglas County Fire District No. 2, the Glide Volunteer Fire Department, PacifiCorp, Oregon Department of Transportation and Kakua Towing.
