"I'm just in shock," Emily Kierscht said. "I just feel like it's a nightmare that's just going to end."

What Kierscht is feeling could be applied to just about anyone at Missouri Valley High School. She and several others are coming to terms with the death of a classmate and friend.

"It's hard because I knew him for so long," Faith Staska said. "He was a good friend of mine."

16-year-old Syler Haase was about to be a junior at Missouri Valley. Friday night, the well-liked student athlete was killed on Highway 30 in a head-on crash. The other driver also died.

That sense of silence felt in Logan, Iowa, too. It is the hometown of 18-year-old Cody Wills. He was behind the other wheel.

"Somebody is there one minute and then gone the next," LeeAnn Kirby said. "It can happen to anyone."

The loss of two lives is far from setting in. The teens said the stretch of highway is one that has many of them on edge.

"You could be coming around a corner and there could be a semi drifting off in your lane and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it because you can't swerve to the other lane," Quinten Vogel said.
