Pittsboro, N.C : Two NC Troopers injured after driver crashes into cruiser in Chatham County on Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2016

Two North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers were hurt after a crash on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. on US 64 at Bowers Store Road., about midway between Siler City and Pittsboro, NC Highway Patrol officials said.

The crash happened when a trooper had already pulled over a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of US 64 and a second trooper stopped to check on the scene, officials say.

The second trooper, which had blue lights active on his Dodge Charger cruiser, was then hit in the back by 1999 Chevrolet sedan, according to officials.

Two troopers were in the patrol car that was hit at the time.

Authorities are not sure why the driver of the car hit the patrol cruiser.

Derek Bowden Jr, age 32, of the 2800 block of Bowers Store Road in Pleasant Garden was charged with reckless driving, fail to mover over causing injury and failure to reduce speed.

Both troopers were transported to UNC Hospital.

Bowden was transported to Chatham County Hospital with minor injuries.
