Mount Vernon, IL : Two women die in crash near Interstate 64 in Washington County early Friday, July 29, 2016
Two Mt. Vernon women died early Friday when the vehicle they were riding in struck a tree near Interstate 64.
Passengers Chelsea M. Dunn, 20, and Wilyssa B. Moore, 19, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington County Coroner's Office.
Another passenger, Jessica M. McSwain, 30, of Mt. Vernon, was taken to a local hospital where she is in good condition, according to an Illinois State Police news release. The driver, Zacchaues Williams, 31, of St. Louis, was flown to a regional hospital where he is in serious condition, the release states.
The crash happened at around 1 a.m. Friday near Mile Post 54. Williams was driving a 1993 Cadillac in the left lane on I-64 eastbound when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the right side of the road and entered onto the shoulder where it struck a tree, the release states. The roadway was closed for about an hour for the crash investigation and clean up.
Dunn, Moore and Williams were allegedly not wearing seatbelts while McSwain was wearing a seatbelt, the release states.
Williams has been charged with driving under the influence, improper lane usage and having no valid driver's license.
The investigation is ongoing by the ISP's Traffic Crash Investigation Unit.
