Mount Clemens, MI : Motorcyclist dies after Harrison Township crash on Wednesday, August 3, 2016
A 41-year-old motorcyclist died following a crash late Tuesday on Townhall Street in Harrison Township, sheriff deputies said Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Albert Leo LaFave of Mount Morris.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said a witness reported the motorcycle rider was speeding in the 37000 block of Townhall -- near Metropolitan Parkway and Crocker Boulevard -- when the 2003 Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail left the southbound portion of the road and struck a ditch at 10:16 p.m. The speed limit there is 25 mph.
LaFave, who was not wearing a helmet and was riding alone, was thrown from the motorcycle and severely injured. He was transported to McLaren Macomb hospital in Mount Clemens where he subsequently died, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Investigators await the results of toxicology tests before concluding whether LaFave was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which is the second fatality involving a motorcyclist in Macomb County in recent days.
On July 30, 32-year-old Curtis Smith Jr. of Hazel Park died when he struck a tree while riding trails in Lenox Township, police said. Smith was riding a 2013 Honda CRF450R dirt bike when the accident occurred in the 66000 block of Forest, located west of Gratiot Avenue, between 30 Mile Road and 31 Mile Road.
