A 21-year-old motorist faces numerous charges for allegedly driving under the influence of both marijuana and alcohol when he ran a stop sign in Limestone Township, crashing into another car and seriously injuring a passenger in the second vehicle, according to state police.
Among the charges filed against Ethan William Entz, of 928 Kinley Road, Old Lycoming Township, are aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence as well careless driving and reckless driving.
Entz, driving a 2005 Mazda MZ3, also has been charged with one count each of driving under the influence of intoxicants and driving under the influence a controlled substance, police said.
The crash occurred at Route 880 and Middle Road about 1:50 p.m. on Sept. 23, Trooper Andrew Dalkiewicz, the lead investigator, said. The trooper detected the odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the Mazda.
Among those injured was Natasha Evelhair, who was riding in a 2007 Dodge Caliber when the car was hit by Entz’s vehicle, Dalkiewicz said. Evelhair was ejected from the vehicle, the trooper added.
While hospitalized at the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center for nearly two weeks, Evelhair spent part of the time in a medically-induced coma and underwent two surgeries, Dalkiewicz said. She suffered two broken vertebrates and other injuries, he added.
“Entz operated a Mazda after imbibing a sufficient amount of alcohol that rendered him incapable of safely driving the vehicle,” the trooper wrote in a criminal complaint that was filed with the charges.
Accompanied by his parents, Entz was recently arraigned before District Judge Jerry C. Lepley and released on $35,000 bail.
The identity of the other driver was not in the court records.
