Southern Pines, N.C : Man injured after pickup truck crashes on US Highway 1 in Moore County on Tuesday afternoon, January 26, 2016

The driver of a pick-up truck was flown to an area trauma center after a crash in Southern Pines on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened in the northbound lane of US Highway 1 just before the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge shortly before 4 p.m., according to the Aberdeen Times.

A witness at the scene told the newspaper that the truck, which only had a driver as the occupant, went off the right side of US Highway 1 before hitting a tree.

The adult male victim was able to unbuckle his seat belt and get out of the wrecked truck before emergency units reached the scene, the witness said.

The victim was treated at the scene briefly and then transported from the scene by ambulance to a landing zone that had been set up at a ballpark on Morganton Road.

A helicopter from UNC Chapel Hill landed to transport the injured man.

One lane of US Highway 1 in the northbound direction was closed for a short time while the injured man was helped.

Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, and the Southern Pines Police Department responded to the crash.

The wreck was under investigation as of this report.
