MUNSON TOWNSHIP, OH : Mentor patrol car involved in crash while transporting prisoner on Wednesday, 3rd July 2019

A Mentor police officer transporting a prisoner from Geauga County was involved in a crash Wednesday, sending both people to the hospital.

According to police, the officer had picked up a prisoner at the Geauga County Sheriff’s Department when the prisoner began complaining of a medical issue.

The officer turned around and began driving to University Hospital Geauga Medical Center, which was about a mile away, when he struck a Mitsubishi Eclipse at the intersection of U.S. 322 and Ohio 44, police say.The patrol car had its siren and lights on, police say.

Both the officer and prisoner were treated and released at the hospital. The two occupants in the Eclipse declined medical attention, according to police. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

The Geauga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
