Statesville, North Carolina
A Statesville man was hospitalized after his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Lewis Ferry Road about noon on Saturday, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper L. I. Tuckler.
Jerry Benfield was transported to N.C. Wake Forest Baptist Regional Medical Center following the crash southwest of Statesville.
Ray Keever, 83, the driver of the GMC SUV, said he was pulling out of his driveway onto Lewis Ferry Road and didn't see Benfield’s motorcycle.
Keever was driving with his wife, Joyce. Neither was injured.
Neighbor Bob Wike was mowing grass when he saw Benfield pass by on a red Kawasaki motorcycle. Wike said Benfield didn’t appear to be speeding.
Wike turned the corner of his house seconds later and saw the smashed remains of the motorcycle.
Benfield was on his back, bleeding from above his right eye, Wike said. Wike called 911 and helped slow the bleeding with Benfield’s shirt, he said.
Benfield suffered non life-threatening injuries, Tuckler said.
It’s unclear if charges will be filed.
