Deland, FL : Nicholas Eason, 18, dies in traffic crash in Volusia County early Sunday morning, April 3, 2016

Nicholas Eason, 18, of DeLand, died after he was thrown from the moped he was driving early Sunday morning, troopers say.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. in Volusia County. Eason was headed west on U.S. Route 92, in front of a Nissan Xterra.

It was unclear why the driver of the car, Craig Howitt, did not slow down as he neared the back of the moped.

The front of the Xterra hit the rear of the other vehicle, throwing Eason onto the hood of the car, spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said.
