Kissimmee, FL : Ten people were injued after the SUV collided head-on with a bus carrying 16 people at Sherberth Road and Osceola Parkway On Saturday, May 14th, 2016
The driver of the SUV that crashed head-on into a bus Saturday near Disney's Animal Kingdom may have fallen asleep at the wheel, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at about 6 p.m. Saturday along Sherberth Road and Osceola Parkway.
According to troopers, Megan Hester-Villalobos, 36, of Groveland, was driving a 2004 Isuzu SUV south in the northbound lanes of Sherberth Road. The SUV collided head-on with a bus carrying 16 people.
Both vehicles caught fire after the collision.
Hester-Villalobos and a front-seat passenger, 37-year-old Jessee Villalobos, both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center. A child from the SUV was also taken to that hospital.
Eight people on board the bus were taken to Celebration Hospital with various injuries.
Sgt. Kim Montes, of the Florida Highway Patrol, said Hester-Villalobos' son, who was also injured in the crash, stated the family was at a Disney park for the day. He told troopers that he thinks his mother fell asleep and then traveled on the wrong
side of the road.
Troopers don't suspect alcohol was involved in the crash.
Troopers said they haven't been able to talk to either adult passenger of the SUV yet because of their injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending against Hester-Villalobos for driving on the wrong side of the road.
The bus was owned by Super Transportation of Florida LLC.
