Henry County, GA : I-70 reopens in Henry County after fatal crash on Saturday November 14 2015
Indiana State Police reopened I-70 westbound in Henry County just before 10 a.m. Saturday after it was closed Friday night after a fatal accident.
An Indianapolis man was killed Friday night when the semi he was driving ran into the back of stopped traffic on I-70 west bound at the 127 mile marker. The traffic had been stopped for a construction zone at the 123 mile marker.
Joseph D Buie, age 43 of Indianapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henry County Coroner. Around 8:20 p.m. Friday troopers responded to a report of a multi vehicle crash with one semi fully engulfed in flames. When they arrived they found the crash involved nine semis and five passenger vehicles.
A truck hauling coal burst into flames as it ran into the rear of the multiple vehicle crash. The occupants of that truck were transported with serious injuries by medical helicopter. All told five medical helicopters were summoned to the scene, with four landing and transporting patients to Indianapolis area hospitals, some with serious injuries.
I-70 west bound was closed from around 8:30 p.m., with traffic being diverted off onto State Road 1 at the 137 mile marker, Cambridge City Exit. The west bound lanes were still closed at 2:30 a.m. as crews worked to remove the snarled wreckage.
Eight area fire departments responded to assist, as well as numerous EMS services, the Henry County Sheriff's Department, New Castle Police, INDOT and Delaware County EMA.
It will be days before investigators piece together exactly what happened, and before the names of all those involved can be compiled and released.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are closed near New Castle due to a deadly crash.
Six people were initially hospitalized because of the crash at the 127 mile marker in the westbound lanes, four miles east of SR 3. One of the victims later died.
Eyewitness Sports Director Dave Calabro who flew over the scene in Chopper 13 HD while traveling between games Friday night called it the worst crash he had seen in 30 years in television. State Police confirmed it involved eight commercial vehicles and five passenger cars.
Westbound traffic is being diverted onto SR 1, then south to US 40. Authorities expected the area to be closed down overnight and into the morning because of the crash.
Video from Chopper 13 HD shows several semis involved in the crash and dozens of emergency vehicles on the scene. At least two medical helicopters were called to the crash site.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash is a semi-trailer hauling coal. The trailer caught fire and still appeared to be smoldering about an hour after the crash.
