TORONTO, FL : One person dead in Highway 401 crash on Thursday, 27th September 2016

Crashes in the Toronto area have left one person dead, another in critical condition and seven others in hospital.

Ontario Provincial Police say a woman died and another is in hospital after one car rear-ended another vehicle that may have been stopped on Highway 401 near Highway 400 around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Police were also called to a second overnight crash on Highway 401 in Cambridge, Ont., around 3 a.m.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says seven people are in hospital after an SUV crashed into a large truck.

He says the SUV was "obliterated," one person was ejected and four others had to be cut out of the vehicle by rescue workers.

Schmidt says speed may have been a factor in that crash.
