Hopkinton, R.I : Truck driver killed in fiery crash on Route 95 in Hopkinton on Thursday afternoon, July 28, 2016
A tractor-trailer driver was killed Thursday afternoon when he swerved to avoid another vehicle that was changing lanes, lost control and eventually collided head-on with a tree.
The crash caused all lanes of Route 95 between exit 1 in Rhode Island and exit 93 in Connecticut to be shut down for about two hours while crews worked to extinguish a fire and clear the scene.
According to a state police news release, the truck driver was traveling south on Route 95 shortly before 2 p.m. when a black Hyundai changed lanes, moving in front of the truck in the low-speed lane.
The truck driver cut to the right but lost control, striking the guardrail and continuing across the ramp for Exit 1 and striking a tree.
The driver of the Hyundai stopped after witnessing the crash and immediately contacted emergency personnel. The driver was flown by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash remains under state police investigation.
