Newton, IA : 39-year-old woman and 11-year-old daughter killed in a crash on Interstate 80 near Newton on Tuesday afternoon, Nov 17, 2015

A 39-year-old woman and her 11-year-old daughter were killed in a crash in Interstate 80, near Newton, Tuesday afternoon. The woman's two other children were injured but are in stable condition as of Tuesday night.

The crash marks the fifth fatality in 14 hours in central Iowa.

Authorities say the vehicle went off I-80 westbound, east of the Iowa Speedway exits, and landed in the north ditch. The entire top of the car was smashed down.

Rescue crews used the jaws of life to get into the vehicle.

Authorities report four people were inside the vehicle when it apparently dropped off onto the shoulder, over corrected and slid across the roadway before rolling down the deep ditch.

In another crash just before midnight, two people were killed in a rollover crash near Webster City. (learn more)

285 people have been killed this year on Iowa roadways, which is two more people than this time last year.
