St. Joseph County, IN : State Trooper involved in a multiple-vehicle accident on Thursday, January 8, 2015

A State Trooper has been hospitalized after being hit while responding to a crash on the Indiana Toll Road.

Indiana State Police confirmed Trooper Andrew Kocsis had just gotten back in his squad car next to the eastbound lanes of the Toll Road at mile marker 76, near the Notre Dame exit when another vehicle crashed collided with him. The crash reportedly happened around 11:45am, minutes after Kocsis, 32, had responded to a single-car crash. Police say Kocsis' car was rear-ended by an SUV with such force that it pushed him into the back of the car from the accident to which he was responding.

State Police say Kocsis complained of pain and was transported to a nearby hospital, as was Annette Ruth, 26, the driver of the car from the original accident. Neither were said to have life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV was identified as 42-year-old Shane McAdams, who reportedly lost control of his vehicle while passing over an icy bridge near the Notre Dame exit of the Toll Road. Neither McAdams nor his passenger reported injuries.

State Police say the weather has made the Toll Road particularly treacherous, citing almost 12 calls for service since Thursday morning just between the two South Bend exits.
