Motorcyclist Killed After Crashing Into Guardrail
One person was killed in a motorcycle crash early Thursday morning. The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of East Dublin Granville Road and North Hamilton Road in northeast Columbus.
The victim was identified as Cornelius Godfrey.Police say Godfrey, 25, was headed north on the road when he lost control, crashed into a guardrail and went over an embankment.Godfrey had left a bar on Hamilton Road before the crash.When he did not return home, his wife used a cell phone app to track him to the intersection. She spotted the crash and called police.
"It is the worst, worst feeling... It is a nightmare. I never, ever... My family's never experienced this type of pain -- ever," said MonaLisa Montgomery, the victim's sister.Godfrey was a mixed martial arts fighter. The couple has a 2-year-old daughter.Columbus police are reaching out to the Ohio Investigative Unit to look at the incident and the establishment that Godfrey had attended before the crash.
It's the second fatal crash in the last six months involving someone leaving the Hamilton Road Pub and Patio.
Ryan Nesbit was killed when his car hit a tree on Thompson Road in March. Alcohol was a factor in Nesbit's crash.
Following that March incident, agent Eric Wolf says the Ohio Investigative Unit conducted bartender training at Hamilton's Pub.
"We did complete an alcohol server knowledge program at this premises, and we had seven attendees from the permit," said Wolf.Police are waiting for toxicology reports following the motorcycle crash.
