Bakersfield, CA : Man killed in hit-and-run crash in Lamont on Saturday, 24th September 2016
A 26-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash Saturday that sent his vehicle careening into a big rig, authorities said.
The crash occurred at 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of Di Giorgio Road and Myrtle Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 26-year-old, whose name had not yet been released by the coroner’s office, was driving a 2004 Hyundai west on Di Giorgio Road approaching Myrtle Avenue, the CHP said. The driver of a 2000 Ford was headed south on Myrtle and turned west onto Di Giorgio Road directly in the path of the Hyundai.
The front of the Hyundai hit the left rear of the Ford, sending it off the roadway where it crashed into a telephone pole, the CHP said. The Hyundai veered in a southwesterly direction into the eastbound lane and rotated in a clockwise direction.
Meanwhile, a big rig was in the eastbound lane of Di Giorgio approaching Myrtle Avenue. Its driver steered to the right and attempted to brake but was unable to avoid colliding with the Hyundai.
The Hyundai came to rest against the big rig on the south dirt shoulder after its right side slammed into the truck, according to officers.
Telephone wires were knocked down after the Ford hit the pole, the CHP said. The Ford’s driver ran in an unknown direction following the crash, leaving the vehicle on the north dirt shoulder of Di Giorgio Road.
