Farmington, N.M : Five people injured after a vehicle wreck south of Bloomfield on Friday evening, December 16, 2016

A vehicle wreck south of Bloomfield this evening sent five people to the hospital and closed traffic on a portion of U.S. Highway 550.

A white passenger car was t-boned by a U-Haul truck that was traveling north on U.S. Highway 550 near the Red Mesa Express gas station in Nageezi, according to San Juan County Sheriff's Office detective Lt. Kyle Lincoln. The incident was called into dispatch at 5:23 p.m. today.

Five occupants inside the passenger car were transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center with possible injuries. One of the occupants was transported by helicopter, and the remaining occupants were transported by ambulance, Lincoln said.

The occupants of the car were between the ages of 10 and 55 years old. The driver of the car was not intoxicated, Lincoln said.

The driver of the U-Haul truck did not appear to be injured, Lincoln said.

When the car exited the gas station parking lot, it headed south in the northbound lane, where the U-Haul truck was traveling. Lincoln said the driver of the truck tried to avoid the collision and ended up striking the car on the driver's side door.

As of 7:30 p.m., traffic was still blocked in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 550 at the scene while police investigated.
