North Versailles, Pennsylvania
One man is dead and several other people required medical attention as a result of a crash involving a school bus and four other vehicles which closed Route 30 in North Versailles for more than six hours.
A sports utility vehicle and a pickup truck appeared to have the worst damage from the impact of the collisions, but two cars were also damaged. Some students who were among the 26 on board the school bus described their traumatic experience to Pittsburgh's Action News 4.
"The bus was shaking and I was afraid we were going to tip over. I started smelling smoke and stuff, and I seen when they were pulling the lady out of the car," said Quenshay Foster.
"It was crazy. The bottom of one man's car was on fire," said Asiyah Ridgely.
"I was scared," said Quantrez Foster.
The 26 students heading for Propel Braddock Hills, Propel Pitcairn and Propel East, were on board a McKeesport Area School District bus operated by Pennsylvania American Coach Lines.
"Four students were transported to local health care facilities for bumps and bruises," Propel Schools said in a written statement.
The Medical Examiner's Office said crash victim Greg Huston, 41, of East McKeesport died at UPMC MckKeesport Hospital.
Allegheny County police accident reconstruction experts spent hours and the scene. North Versailles police declined to release information about the crash, referring any questions to county homicide investigators, who did not respond to requests for comment as of 5:30 p.m..
A student who was on the school bus said it appeared her as though the first collision began when a driver attempted to pass the bus.
"It looked like the man, he was rushing somewhere, so he was trying to get in front of us, because, you know, buses are slow. And I guess he hit a blind spot where my bus driver wouldn't see him and we hit him," said Ridgely.
